ABOUT

Velvet Joy Productions is an independent film and visual arts studio based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Set up by filmmaker Paul Sng in 2015 to produce work about people who challenge the status quo, we work collaboratively to amplify underrepresented voices on screen and in print, and capture extraordinary aspects of everyday life. Our films have been broadcast on national television and screened internationally. Say hello.

WORK

Sleaford Mods – Invisible Britain shows the most relevant and uncompromising British band in years sticking two fingers up to the zeitgeist and articulating the rage and desperation of those without a voice in austerity Britain. Part band doc, part look at the state of the nation, the documentary features individuals and communities attempting to find hope among the ruins, against a blistering soundtrack by Sleaford Mods.

Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle explores the agenda behind the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in the U.K. over the past thirty years. The film reveals how individuals and communities are fighting against the state and private developers, as they try to save their homes from demolition, while investigating the decisions that turned a crisis into a tragedy.

Invisible Britain: Portraits of Hope and Resilience reveals untold stories from people who have been left out of the media narrative and left behind by government policy. Featuring the work of accomplished documentary photographers, the book presents people speaking in their own words to create a narrative showing how an unprecedented world of austerity, de-industrialisation and social upheaval is affecting us all.

IN PRODUCTION

Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché
X-Ray Spex founder Poly Styrene was, as Billboard proclaimed, "one of the least conventional front-persons in rock history”. But beyond the music, the fashion, and her influential role as a champion for women and people of colour in the punk era, is the story of a mother, a maven and a true maverick. In Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché Poly’s daughter Celeste Bell sets out across three continents to explore her late mother’s impact and legacy, whilst also revealing the complexities and contradictions behind this most remarkable of artists.
